Case Study 1

mkw premises

Company: MKW Group

Background: The MKW Group is an association of four companies employing 140 people. The company offer engineering services from design, manufacture, testing and installation. They also manufacture a small to medium sized wind turbine called Gazelle.

Issue: MKW were expecting their energy bill to increase from £64,000 to £90,000 during the course of 2006 and wanted to limit the impact this would have on the business as energy costs were accounting for 10% of their turnover. MKW wished to raise employee awareness, develop energy management reporting and prioritise low and no cost opportunities for saving.

Diagnosis: The initial diagnostic visit highlighted some potential areas of energy saving through monitoring, targeting, and lighting.

Action: A detailed energy audit was carried out which highlighted potential savings of 12% of the company’s energy bill. An energy management and monitoring and targeting programme was recommended as analysis of the energy bills showed that there was scope to minimise out of hours usage. The analysis also showed that the maximum demand availability could be reduced. A review of the lighting system demonstrated savings of 10% of the running costs through improved control, using natural daylight to reduce artificial lighting requirements and replacement of T8 bulbs with more energy efficient T5 bulbs.
